Officials suggest link between Texas prosecutors' slaying and racist prison gang

Kaufman County, Rexas, District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found shot to death in their home Saturday, just two months after the county's assistant DA, Mark Hasse, was gunned down outside the courthouse. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

Texas officials theorized Monday that the slayings of a Texas prosecutor and his wife over the weekend and the shooting death of a prosecutor in the same county in January may have been the work of a white supremacist group chillingly called the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

Ten alleged members of the gang could face the death penalty if they're convicted of charges ? including murder ? in a federal racketeering indictment unsealed in November.?Texas law enforcement agencies warned shortly after the indictment was opened that there was "credible information" that members were planning to "retaliate."

And the multi-year investigation of the gang had in fact reached into Kaufman County, where District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were shot to death Saturday inside their home, almost exactly two months after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was gunned down in a parking lot.

While Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes stressed to reporters Sunday that "there is nothing to indicate" that the two shootings were related, County Judge Bruce Wood ? the chief administrator in Kaufman County, akin to chairman of a county commission ? told NBC 5 of Dallas on Monday: "This was not just a random act. It seems to me there has to be some connection."

And U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, on Monday said he also believed both shootings could be the work of the Aryan Brotherhood.

"It seems that a scenario may be developing that the district attorney's office was investigating this gang or another gang and they wanted to prevent that investigation, and therefore they resort to violence,"?Poe told CNN.

Publicly available FBI files?describe the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, or ABT, as a whites-only, men-only organization with thousands of members operating both inside and outside state and federal prisons throughout Texas. The gang was formed in the early 1980s and modeled itself after a California prison gang of the same name, the FBI says.

Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center discusses possible links between a Texas white supremacist group and the deaths of two prosecutors there.

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, told MSNBC that ABT was a well-oiled criminal machine and that he wouldn't be surprised if it was behind the killings.

"Like most of these race-based prison gangs, they are fundamentally a criminal enterprise," Potok said. "They are certainly white supremacists, but when push comes to shove, that is quickly set aside in the interests of the criminal enterprise."

Almost from the day Hasse was killed, speculation swirled around the county that his death might have been retribution for the racketeering indictments charging 34 alleged ABT members, including four alleged leaders, with multiple murders, kidnappings, assaults and drug operations.

The original Aryan Brotherhood was formed in the notorious maximum-security prison in San Quentin, Calif., in 1964 ? as a response to the integration of the prison, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Starting as a race-based protective organization, the AB grew to one of the country's largest prison gangs, with some 15,000 members. Many of the groups operations on the "outside" are direted by leaders who are still incarcerated.

Still unclear is why the gang, or its Texas branch, would target just Kaufman County, which was only one of 24 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies involved in the sprawling investigation. But whether it was involved or not, it's clear that the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas is a nasty bunch.

Members ? who identify themselves with tattoos incorporating Nazi-era symbols, often the swastika or the SS lighting bolts ? are required to report to outside leaders when they are released from prison, FBI case files record.

The indictment lists alleged crimes ? including murder, arson, assault and drug distribution ? dating as far back as 1993. Some of the alleged murder victims were ABT members who were killed to enforce discipline, it charges.

"ABT uses extreme violence and threats of violence to maintain internal discipline and retaliate against those believed to be cooperating with law enforcement," Assistant U.S. Attorney General Lanny Breuer said when the indictment was unsealed Nov. 9.?

"Through violence and intimidation, ABT allegedly exerts control over prison populations and neighborhoods and instills fear in those who come in contact with its members," he said.

The operation, as described by the government, is closely similar to that of the 211 Crew, a white-supremacist prison gang in Colorado to which Evan Spencer Ebel was believed to have belonged. Ebel is suspected of having shot and killed Colorado Prisons Director Tom Clements on March 19 before he drove to Texas and died in a shootout with police in Decatur two days later.

Authorities have said they were making "routine inquiries" into whether Ebel may have been involved in the death of Hasse, perhaps through some affiliation between the gangs, but no link between Ebel and ABT has been publicly reported. When the McLellands were killed Saturday, Ebel had been dead nine days.

Teachers' gestures boost math learning

Monday, April 1, 2013

Students perform better when their instructors use hand gestures ? a simple teaching tool that could yield benefits in higher-level math such as algebra.

A study published in Child Development, the top-ranked educational psychology journal, provides some of the strongest evidence yet that gesturing may have a unique effect on learning. Teachers in the United States tend to use gestures less than teachers in other countries.

"Gesturing can be a very beneficial tool that is completely free and easily employed in classrooms," said Kimberly Fenn, study co-author and assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University. "And I think it can have long-lasting effects."

Fenn and Ryan Duffy of MSU and Susan Cook of the University of Iowa conducted an experiment with 184 second-, third- and fourth-graders in Michigan elementary classrooms.

Half of the students were shown videos of an instructor teaching math problems using only speech. The others were shown videos of the instructor teaching the same problems using both speech and gestures.

The problem involved mathematical equivalence (i.e., 4+5+7=__+7), which is known to be critical to later algebraic learning. In the speech-only videos, the instructor simply explains the problem. In the other videos, the instructor uses two hand gestures while speaking, using different hands to refer to the two sides of the equation.

Students who learned from the gesture videos performed better on a test given immediately afterward than those who learned from the speech-only video.

Another test was given 24 hours later, and the gesture students actually showed improvement in their performance while the speech-only students did not.

While previous research has shown the benefits of gestures in a one-on-one tutoring-style environment, the new study is the first to test the role of gestures in equivalence learning in a regular classroom.

The study also is the first to show that gestures can help students transfer learning to new contexts ? such as transferring the knowledge learned in an addition-based equation to a multiplication-based equation.

Fenn noted that U.S. students lag behind those in many other Western countries in math and have a particularly hard time mastering equivalence problems in early grades.

"So if we can help them grasp this foundational knowledge earlier," she said, "it will help them as they learn algebra and higher levels of mathematics."

TMobile reverses course, reveals Lumia 810 won't be updated to support LTE

We've some really unfortunate news to share with Lumia 810 owners who'd purchased the handset on T-Mobile's word that a software update would enable LTE support. As it turns out, despite the Lumia 810's hardware readiness and regulatory approval to access Band 4 LTE, that's not going to happen -- T-Mobile isn't going to release the update. Sadly, this isn't an April Fools' prank. If you're scratching your head about the revelation, you're not alone. Representatives for the UnCarrier first revealed to us back in January that a software update would enable LTE functionality, which is a position that it's maintained up through last week. As it stands, this leaves T-Mobile without an LTE offering for Windows Phone users, as the smartphone field is now limited to the Apple iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4. We've asked T-Mobile whether it might make concessions to those who purchased the Lumia 810 on good faith that an LTE software update would be released, but for the moment, you'll need to find solace in the carrier's speedy HSPA+ 42 network.

Part of Detroit Metro airport terminal evacuated

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) ? Authorities say they've evacuated part of the smaller of two terminals at Detroit Metropolitan Airport as a bomb squad responds to a suspicious item at a security checkpoint.

Airport spokesman Mike Conway says the check-in lobby at the airport's North Terminal in Romulus was shut down about 6:15 a.m. Monday.

No injuries are reported.

Conway says the item was in an X-ray machine at a security checkpoint. He says one bomb squad responded and a second was called to the scene.

Conway says it's not immediately known how many travelers are affected. Video taken by helicopter and shown on Detroit-area TV stations showed hundreds of people walking away from the terminal along a sidewalk. Many of them were pulling or carrying luggage.

Jessica Lynch is ?happy to put Iraq in the past?

Ten years, ago, 19-year-old Army Pvt. Jessica Lynch was rescued with multiple injuries after her supply unit had come under fire and she was taken captive in Iraq. Lynch was the only POW in her unit to come out alive, and the first woman POW to be rescued in war.

Lynch, on the 10th anniversary of her rescue, went on the "Today" show on Monday to talk about the intervening years and the difficulty she had had with being in the spotlight. Thanks to the story of the capture having been inaccurate, the Iraq war veteran had gone from being a media darling to the poster child for an ill-prepared war effort.

She recalled, ?I set the record straight as much as I can. I did Congress and testified to let everyone know ? the real story.? For example, her many broken bones, attributed to enemy fire, came from her Humvee crash. And while it was reported that she used her M16 rifle, she said it actually had jammed.

The West Virginia native is now a motivational speaker, teacher and mother?the latter is the role for which "she feels the most pride," she said.

Lynch told "Today," "I?m happy we?re at this 10-year mark, but I?m happy to put Iraq in the past. It?s always going to be part of my life."

She added, "I'm blessed and happy to be here."

Her injuries, however, always serve as a reminder of the war: She has had 21 surgeries, including for a broken back and two broken legs. She wears a brace on the left leg and her right leg still hurts. She said, ?I do the best that I can and am just thankful that I'm here.?

Lynch also told "Today" that as the only one in her unit to survive, she has had to deal with survivor?s guilt. "My best friend [Lori Paestewa] didn?t get to come back, and I did. She had two beautiful kids," Lynch said. "It?s hard to know they?re going to have to grow up without their mom.?

She added, ?I have that never-give-up attitude. As long as you keep it in your mind, you can do anything. That?s what it?s all about, it?s persevering.?

Two in China first known deaths from H7N9 bird flu

BEIJING (AP) ? Two Shanghai men have died from a lesser-known type of bird flu in the first known human deaths from the strain, and Chinese authorities said it wasn't clear how they were infected but there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission.

A third person, a woman in the nearby province of Anhui, also contracted the H7N9 strain and was in critical condition, China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said in a report on its website Sunday.

There was no sign that any of the three, who were infected over the past two months, had contracted the disease from each other, and no sign of infection in the 88 people who had closest contact with them, the medical agency said.

H7N9 bird flu is considered a low pathogenic strain that cannot easily be contracted by humans. The overwhelming majority of human deaths from bird flu have been caused by the more virulent H5N1, which decimated poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.

The World Health Organization is "closely monitoring the situation" in China, regional agency spokesman Timothy O'Leary said in Manila.

"There is apparently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, and transmission of the virus appears to be inefficient, therefore the risk to public health would appear to be low," O'Leary said.

The 87-year-old victim became ill on Feb. 19 and died on Feb 27. The other man, 27, became ill on Feb. 27 and died on March 4, the Chinese health commission said. A 35-year-old woman in the Anhui city of Chuzhou became ill on March 9 and is being treated.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted tests and confirmed Saturday that all three cases were H7N9, the health commission said.

Scientists have been closely monitoring the H5N1 strain of the virus, fearing that it could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been connected to contact with infected birds.
