Galleries: Cellphone photos at Moore College

Posted: Sunday, June 30, 2013, 3:01 AM

Picture Alfred Hitchcock's sinister 1943 Shadow of a Doubt and Walker Evans' portraits of New York subway riders taken between 1938 and 1941 (he kept a camera in his coat and caught his subjects sitting across the aisle off-guard, but looking suspiciously prepared). They're the two obvious ancestors of photographer Ditta Baron Hoeber's mysterious serial cellphone photographs of the interiors of trains, which make up her exhibition "Proximity" in Moore College of Art and Design's Goldie Paley Gallery. But there's a glimmer of early, conceptual, pre-Weimaraner William Wegman, too.

What Hoeber stealthily captures with her cellphone camera while traveling by train looks like something in the background of an Evans photo or a Hitchcock film - that mundane bit in an otherwise absorbing image that your eye would never naturally gravitate to. More often than not, it's extremely difficult to recognize what she has actually shot. Many of the images produced by her seemingly unfamiliar perspectives and extreme close-ups suggest painted abstractions of spaces, but they're entirely photographic and real - in fact, train riders see their environment from Hoeber's perspectives every day but would never think of them as subjects for photographs, likewise the close-ups.

The three photographs that constitute Hoeber's Gray Step probably depict an actual set of molded plastic steps as seen from above (with part of a person's knee or elbow jutting into the frame), but the images also could pass for a concrete wall seen straight-on. The two photographs in Yellow might be a view of Hoeber's lap and the floor of the train. I'm still not sure.

Hoeber is also a poet, and she joins her poems in sequences similar to those of her photographs; she uses the white page and spaces between words in the same way she presents her photographs, with areas of white around and between them, to create a sense of stillness. Though I would have read Hoeber's poems in the gallery had they been available - I caught up with them later, on her website, dbhoeber.com - I think the decision to show the photographs by themselves was the right one. There's plenty of poetry in this room.

More of Hoeber's work - in this case, serial self-portraits - can be seen in "17 Women," a group show organized by artist Anne Minich for the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral.

Linear transcendence

Extended a week from its original closing date, Max Cole's second one-person show at Larry Becker Contemporary Art focuses on her recent ink-and-acrylic drawings on rag paper, although three large paintings from 2010 - Salt Marsh, Pampas, and Dog Star - have been included for those not familiar with her work. (Cole, a minimalist known for her compositions of horizontal lines, has often been compared to Agnes Martin, who was a decade older. But her style is distinctly her own).

Cole's works on paper are so exquisitely drawn, their lines so thin and crisp, they could be mistaken for etchings. One can see why the late, discerning Italian collector of postwar American art, Count Giuseppe Panza, who bought Cole's work throughout her career until his death in 2010, considered Cole as much a minimalist as a conceptual artist - and even a mystic. Speaking about her paintings and works on paper in 2000, he told an interviewer: "They express the moment in which we realize that our minds can live in a reality that normally escapes us . . . I think her studio is the place where she can experience these flashes, which are the reason for her insistence on doing what she does: The assiduous search for this moment that has to come, and that comes only if you seek it."

As the world turns

Pentimenti Gallery usually devotes its summer group show to art that reflects the state of the world - health, educational, political, sociological, environmental, and technological developments are typical subjects of its artists' scrutiny - and this year's is abiding by tradition.

"Global Conscious, Local Artists" also refines Pentimenti's aesthetic, which is a taste for contemporary Pop Art - and modernist design-influenced art that is made by hand but that reveals little of the artist's physical imprint on a particular work.

Among my favorites in this six-artist show are Paul Romero's videos, "Playground Fun," made on the Reading Railroad viaduct, now known as the Philly High Line; Jay Walker's sprawling tape installation; Tim Eads' photographic portraits of objects culled from the trash; and Tim Portlock's large-scale prints of postindustrial cities that use 3D special effects and computer game-authoring software.

?

Pentimenti Gallery, 145 N. 2d St., 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 12 to 5 p.m. Saturday. 215-625-9990 or www.pentimenti.com. Through July 13.

"Galleries" by Edith Newhall and "Art" by Edward J. Sozanski appear on alternating Sundays.

IFC Midnight takes U.S. rights to Supernatural Thriller '+1'

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - IFC Midnight has acquired U.S. rights to Dennis Iliadis' supernatural thriller "+1," which stars Rhys Wakefield ("The Purge") Ashley Hinshaw ("Chronicle"), Logan Miller and Natalie Hall.

Written by Bill Gullo and based on a story by "Last House on the Left" director Iliadis, "+1" premiered at the 2013 South by Southwest Festival.

Story follows three college friends who go to the biggest party of the year, each looking for something different: love, sex and a simple human connection. When a mysterious phenomenon disrupts the party, it quickly descends into chaos that challenges their friendships and survival skills.

Tim Perell ("World's Greatest Dad") produced the film, which was executive produced by Brothers Strause, Edson Williams, Thomas Nittmann and Guy Botham. The movie was shot by cinematographer Mihai Malmaire, who did gorgeous work on Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master."

"+1" is a Process Production in partnership with leading VFX company Lola/Hydraulx ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), which provided visual effects for the film.

"Dennis Iliadis has created a sexy, thrilling mind-bender that delivers on many levels. We look forward to bringing it to the widest audience possible," said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films.

Deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.

New iron catalyst promises green future for hydrogenation

June 27, 2013 ? A new iron nanoparticle catalyst developed by researchers in Japan and Canada promises to drastically improve the efficiency of hydrogenation, a key chemical process used in a wide array of industrial applications. Cleaner, safer and cheaper than traditional rare metal-based catalysts, the new, more environmentally friendly technique marks a breakthrough for the emerging field of green chemistry.

Hydrogenation, the reaction of molecular hydrogen with another compound or element, is one of the world's most highly studied chemical reactions, with industrial applications ranging from petrochemistry, to food production, to pharmaceuticals.

Most such applications of hydrogenation use rare metal catalysts such as palladium or platinum to speed up chemical reactions. While highly efficient, these metals are expensive and limited in supply, posing environmental and economic challenges.

To get around these problems, researchers at McGill University, the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science and the Institute for Molecular Science developed their new technique using iron, a much less expensive and far more abundant element. Iron has been ruled out in the past due to the fact that it rusts in the presence of oxygen and water, negating its catalytic effect.

The new technique, described in a paper published in the journal Green Chemistry, produces iron nanoparticles directly inside a polymer matrix, which protects the iron surface from rusting while allowing the reactants to reach it and react. The resulting system of polymer-stabilized iron nanoparticles in water is the first of its kind: a safe, cheap and environmentally friendly catalyst system for hydrogenation reactions.

"Our aim is to develop iron-based catalysts not only for hydrogenation but also a variety of organic transformations that can be used in future industrial applications," explains RIKEN researcher Dr. Yoichi M. A. Yamada, one of the authors of the paper. "If rare metal-based catalysts can be replaced by iron-based ones, then we can overcome our costly and dangerous dependency on rare metals."

Review: Ouya brings indie games to your TV

The ongoing explosion in independently developed, low-budget video games has been a boon for players who travel. Whether I'm on the road with an iPad, an Android smartphone or a laptop, I know there's a huge library of games to play.

When I get home, though, I want to play on a bigger screen. That's where the Ouya comes in. It promises to deliver the best in inexpensive indie gaming on a high-resolution screen, through a small device that runs the Android operating system designed for phones and tablets.

Ouya costs just $100 ? a few hundred dollars less than what you'd pay for a major game console. Thousands of gamers and game developers got Ouyas over the past few months after contributing at least $95 to Ouya's creators through the group-fundraising site Kickstarter. The device went on sale more broadly on Tuesday.

Ouya runs Google's Android system and is built around Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor, used mostly in smartphones and other mobile devices. That should make it easy to port over the thousands of games already made for Android phones and tablets, but for now you're limited to software specifically designed for Ouya. Nearly 180 games are available so far through Ouya's online store, with many more expected.

Each game has a version you can download for free. If you like what you see, you can download a full version for a few bucks. By contrast, games for one of the big three consoles can cost as much as $60 each ? usually with no free trial.

The device itself is a cube measuring 3 inches on each side, with slightly rounded corners on the bottom. The controller is a bit chunkier. It resembles what's available with Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation, with two exceptions: The Ouya controller has a touchpad in the middle (although none of the games I sampled took advantage of it), and its grips are longer, each accommodating an AA battery. One controller comes with the Ouya, and extra ones cost $50 each.

Setup is easy once you connect the Ouya to your high-definition television set using a supplied HDMI cable. When you turn on the console, it automatically searches for Wi-Fi connections. You can also connect to the Internet through an Ethernet cable, which you have to provide yourself. Once connected, you need to create an account and supply credit card information.

Then you're taken to a simple menu with four options: play, discover, make and manage. "Make" takes you to an area for potential game developers, while "manage" lets you tinker with system settings.

"Discover" takes you to Ouya's game store. You can find games by genre, such as role-playing, sim/strategy and "meditative." You can also check out showcases such as "couch gaming with friends."

Download speeds aren't bad; it took about 20 minutes for me to transfer a 725-megabyte file over Comcast high-speed Internet. Smaller games are, of course, much faster. The device has 8 gigabytes of internal storage, and you can add more by connecting an external hard drive to the Ouya with a USB cable.

Once you have your game, clicking "play" on the home page takes you to your personal library. Compared with the sometimes daunting menus on the Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, Ouya's displays are clean and elegant.

The offerings on the Ouya store vary wildly in quality and ambition. Android is an open platform, so anyone can write software for it. That means you have professionally executed games such as the beloved "You Don't Know Jack" competing head-to-head with the sloppy trivia game "Quizania." Some popular console games, including "The Bard's Tale" and "Final Fantasy III," have been adapted for the Ouya, but it isn't the place for blockbuster titles such as the latest "Call of Duty" and "Grand Theft Auto."

More prevalent are games that have been cult hits on PCs and smartphones, including "Canabalt," ''Saturday Morning RPG" and "Organ Trail." There are a few Ouya exclusives, including the 3-D puzzler "Polarity" and the multiplayer archery game "TowerFall."

Ouya offers high-resolution displays in 1080p, comparable to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii U. Most of the Ouya's offerings are fairly low-def, though, and if you're looking for the wide-screen majesty of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" or "BioShock Infinite," you won't find it here. If your video-game habit dates back to the 1970s, you'll notice a distinct retro feel to the Ouya's library. That's not a complaint; there's something refreshing about taking on a simple running-and-jumping game such as "Canabalt" after you've survived a grueling epic like Sony's PS3 hit "The Last of Us."

Indeed, some of the more satisfying indie releases of the last few years ? say, "Fez," ''Hotline Miami" or "Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine" ? have combined old-school graphics with game play that's more sophisticated than most big-budget console releases offer. Nothing currently on Ouya matches the quality of those games, but if the system can attract that level of talent, it will be a console to be reckoned with.

If you're a hardcore gamer, it won't replace your Xbox or PlayStation, but for $100 it's a worthy supplement.

About Ouya:

The $100 device plays games designed for it on high-definition screens. Although it runs the Android operating system used in smartphones and tablets, games need to be specifically adapted to work on Ouya. Nearly 180 games are available through Ouya's online store.

Initially available only to people who made donations through Kickstarter, Ouya is now sold through Ouya's website as well as Amazon.com, Target, Best Buy and GameStop.

Cole Real Estate Investments: Evaluate Following IPO - Seeking Alpha

Cole Real Estate Investments (COLE) began trading as a public company on June 20th at $11.50 per share. Through the offering period of October 2008 to February 2012 the formerly non-traded REIT originally known as Cole Credit Property Trust III raised $4.7 billion. Investors in the REIT have not had access to liquidity throughout the offering stage and now have the ability to sell their shares at will. In addition to listing on the New York Stock Exchange, the company initiated a modified Dutch auction tender offer. Assuming certain conditions are met, investors have an opportunity to earn minimum gross returns of 16% for less than a two month holding period.

The Offer

Cole Real Estate Investments is offering to purchase up to $250,000,000 of its common stock outstanding (roughly 3.9%-4.1% of shares outstanding depending on purchase price) at a purchase price not greater than $13 per share and no less than $12.25 per share. The tender offer is in place until 5:00pm EST on August 8, 2013. Shareholders of record may attempt to tender their shares in $0.05 increments:

$12.25 --- $12.30 --- $12.35 ---- $12.40????$13.00

Cole Real Estate Investments will purchase under the tender offer at the lowest price offered until the full offering amount is reached. For example if $250,000,000 worth of stock is offered at $12.25 and you submit a tender offer at $12.80, you will not have your order filled. If the offer is over-subscribed at a specific bid increment, all tendering shareholders at that increment will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

An interesting point to keep in mind is that shareholders with 99 shares or less and tender their shares will be filled first. Larger blocks of shares will be filled second based upon the conditions described above. This gives investors with a small amount of capital a better chance that their order will be filled at $12.25 (assuming the tender offer goes through).

Why A Tender Offer?

While there are many reasons the company is initiating a tender offer, the most obvious that comes to mind is an attempt to keep the share price temporarily propped up. Keep in mind that investors have been holding this illiquid investment for the past five years and this is their first option for cashing in. I believe Cole management is well aware of this and likely assumes that if an investor sees $11.50 on their account statements the day Cole begins trading and coincidently a tender offer to purchase at $12.25 (roughly 6.5% higher), they are likely to hold shares and submit them for the tender offer. This will hopefully give the market (and investors) some time to evaluate the company as an investment rather than simply selling and moving along.

We saw a very similar scenario play out with Chambers Street Properties (CSG) in June. Shares were listed at $10 and stayed relatively stable during the tender offer period. Although some volatility was present, the company was successful in getting investors to hold their shares. The CSG tender offer was to purchase up to 5% of the shares outstanding and according to the results the company received an offer to purchase 30.57% of the shares outstanding. While there is no guarantee the Cole Real Estate Investments tender offer will directly track the performance of Chambers Street Properties, one could use this as a base case scenario.

The Risks

I would point potential investors to the offering document to review the risks associated with this tender offer. Most importantly to keep in mind is Cole has the ability to extend or withdraw the offer up to one day prior to expiration. If you decided to purchase shares and then participate in the tender offer you will want to keep a close eye on the expiration date as the premium may not materialize. I will highlight a few other risks which I believe are noteworthy:

  • If an increase or decrease of more than 10% in the market price of the common stock of COLE, Dow Jones Industrial Average, New York Stock Exchange Index, or Nasdaq Composite Index, or Standard & Poor's 500 Index, measured from the close of trading on June 20, 2013, occurs, the tender offer can be called off (this is very critical to watch). COLE closed at $10.90 per share on June 20th and as of the time of this writing has not moved outside the +/- 10% band
  • If any entity acquires more than 5% of the company the tender offer may be called off.
  • Any lawsuits brought against Cole Real Estate Investments relating to this offer will cause the offer to be called off. Purchasing COLE may result in a total loss of principal.

Return Potential

The return potential on this short term investment depends on several factors. First is your entry price point (for all assumptions below I will use a purchase price of $10.50). Second is the specific bid increment you tender your shares at and if that bid increment is actually filled.

  • Assuming you purchase shares at $10.50, submit your tender offer in the proper manner, and Cole Real Estate Investments purchases all your stock at the minimum bid level, $12.25, you would make $1.75 per share. This is a hypothetical gain of 16% (gross) for a two month hold.

Your actual return may be higher or lower depending on your purchase price and where you decide to tender shares. Of course be aware that the offer may not go through at all.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that Cole Real Estate Investments can rescind this offer at any point prior to August 8th. I would urge any investor to keep a close eye on the company's press releases and financial filings to make sure this does not occur.

Disclaimer: This is not an offer to buy or sell any security. Carefully consider your investment goals and objectives before initiating a position in Cole Real Estate Investments and please remember that the value of investments in equity securities, like COLE, will fluctuate in response to general economic conditions and to changes in the prospects of particular companies and/or sectors in the economy. Purchasing COLE may result in a total loss of principal.

Note: All data reported and graphed is pulled directly from Cole Real Estate Investments Investor Relations website.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in COLE over the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Feeling stressed? Oxytocin could help you reach out to others for support

June 25, 2013 ? The next time someone snubs you at a party and you think hiding is the solution to escape your feelings of rejection, think again. Scientists have shown that reaching out to other people during a stressful event is an effective way to improve your mood, and researchers at Concordia University suggest that the hormone oxytocin may help you accomplish just that.

Mark Ellenbogen and Christopher Cardoso, researchers in Concordia's Centre for Research in Human Development are taking a closer look at oxytocin, a hormone traditionally studied for its role in childbirth and breastfeeding, and more recently for its effect on social behaviour. Their latest study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, shows that oxytocin can increase a person's trust in others following social rejection.

Explains Ellenbogen, "that means that instead of the traditional 'fight or flight' response to social conflict where people get revved up to respond to a challenge or run away from it, oxytocin may promote the 'tend and befriend' response where people reach out to others for support after a stressful event. That can, in turn, strengthen social bonds and may be a healthier way to cope."

In a double-blind experiment, 100 students were administered either oxytocin or a placebo via a nasal spray, then subjected to social rejection. In a conversation that was staged to simulate real life, researchers posing as students disagreed with, interrupted and ignored the unsuspecting participants. Using mood and personality questionnaires, the data showed that participants who were particularly distressed after being snubbed by the researchers reported greater trust in other people if they sniffed oxytocin prior to the event, but not if they sniffed the placebo. In contrast, oxytocin had no effect on trust in those who were not emotionally affected by social rejection.

Cardoso, who is a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology, says that studying oxytocin may provide future options for those who suffer from mental health conditions characterized by high levels of stress and low levels of social support, like depression. "If someone is feeling very distressed, oxytocin could promote social support seeking, and that may be especially helpful to those individuals," he says, noting that people with depression tend to naturally withdraw even though reaching out to social support systems can alleviate depression and facilitate recovery.

For Ellenbogen, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Developmental Psychopathology, the contribution of stress the development of mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder has long been a research focus. "I'm concerned with the biological underpinnings of stress, particularly interpersonal stress, which is thought to be a strong predictor of these mental disorders. So, oxytocin is a natural fit with my interests," says Ellenbogen. "The next phase of research will begin to study oxytocin's effects in those who are at high risk for developing clinical depression."

Cardoso says reactions to oxytocin seem to be more variable depending on individual differences and contextual factors than most pharmaceuticals, so learning more about how the hormone operates can help scientists to figure out how it might be used in future treatments.

"Previous studies have shown that natural oxytocin is higher in distressed people, but before this study nobody could say with certainty why that was the case," Cardoso says, "In distressed people, oxytocin may improve one's motivation to reach out to others for support. That idea is cause for a certain degree of excitement, both in the research community and for those who suffer from mood disorders."

(AP) ? Back in her comfort zone on Centre Court, Serena Williams delivered an overpowering statement: When her serve is steaming, she's the woman to beat at Wimbledon.

Putting aside her recent comments that led to a couple of apologies and a brief spat with Maria Sharapova, Williams looked every bit the five-time champion. She began her Wimbledon title defense with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mandy Minella of Luxembourg.

"For me, it's the greatest moment for a tennis player, to walk out on Centre Court," Williams said after her first match at Wimbledon since winning the Olympic gold medal there last year. "That was such a great moment, too. So many great memories on this court."

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic also opened with a straight-sets victory, beating Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Mayer is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, losing to Djokovic at that stage last year. But he was never in danger of springing another stunner following Rafael Nadal's first-round exit a day earlier.

Djokovic took a 3-0 lead in the first set and broke for a 6-5 lead in the second to take control. He served out the match to love before saluting the crowd with a fist pump.

"It was a big pleasure again performing here on Centre Court in front of the packed crowd," Djokovic said. "For the first round, it was tricky. ... I think (Mayer's) game is really well suited for grass, so it took a lot of effort."

For Williams, this was a chance to put the focus back on tennis following the verbal jousting with Sharapova over their private lives ? and comments about an Ohio rape case for which she had to apologize ? and she took full advantage.

As usual on grass, the top-ranked Williams dominated with her hard serve, winning the first set without dropping a point on her service game. Her main weapon let her down only at the start of the second set, when Minella took a 2-0 lead after Williams double-faulted on break point.

She was one point from going down 3-0 but then won 15 of the next 18 points to take a 4-2 lead, and broke again to wrap up the victory.

"I feel like I was a little rusty for some reason today," Williams said. "I don't feel like I played my best. I felt really upset when I lost my serve in the second set. With that being said, I think Mandy played really well."

Much of the pre-tournament talk was about Williams and Sharapova, the two top players in the game who are on opposite sides of the draw and can't meet before the final.

"It hasn't been a distraction. Like I said, I'm just here to focus on the tennis," Williams said. "I'm just here to play Wimbledon. It's the premier tournament in the world, of the year, so that's what's most important."

Williams improved her career record to 68-8 at the All England Club and extended her career-best winning streak to 32 matches, which included her second French Open title.

Kimiko Date-Krumm, the 42-year-old Japanese veteran, had an even easier time. She needed just 44 minutes to complete a romp over Carina Witthoeft, an 18-year-old German less than half her age and making her Grand Slam debut.

Date-Krumm is the second-oldest player to win a match at Wimbledon after Martina Navratilova, who was 47 when she reached the second round in 2004.

Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion, was knocked out in straight sets by 135th-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium on Monday ? the Spaniard's first loss in the opening round of any Grand Slam event.

The only top player Tuesday who had any difficulty advancing was French Open runner-up David Ferrer. He overcame a second-set slump and a scary late fall to beat Martin Alund of Argentina 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Coming off his first Grand Slam final, the fourth-seeded Spaniard looked as if he could follow Nadal out of the tournament. Alund won the second set and pushed hard in the third. But Ferrer broke for a 6-5 lead and then went 5-1 up in the fourth. At 3-1, however, he fell and grimaced after his left foot slid backward. Ferrer went on to break Alund again. He served out the match with an ace, and afterward said his foot was fine.

Most other matches went according to plan.

Former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro made a winning return to Grand Slam competition, defeating Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 after sitting out the French Open because of respiratory problems.

No. 16 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany was the highest-seeded man to lose. Kohlschreiber wasted a two-set lead against Ivan Dodig of Croatia before retiring in the fifth, citing exhaustion from the flu.

In the women's draw, last year's runner-up, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, won 6-1, 6-1 over Yvonne Meusburger of Austria while No. 6 Li Na of China and No. 7 Angelique Kerber of Germany also advanced in straight sets.

Home favorite Laura Robson delivered the biggest upset, beating No. 10 Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-4 to become the first British woman to beat a top-10 ranked opponent at Wimbledon in 15 years.

"It was nerve-racking before I served for it," Robson said. "I just wanted to focus and take it point by point. Any big win gives you a lot of confidence."

In less of a surprise, Arantxa Rus lost ? again. The 156th-ranked Dutch player equaled a WTA record by extending her losing streak to 17 straight matches with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Russia's Olga Puchkova.

"This year is not a good year for me," Rus said.
