HBT: Cubs would eat $26M on Soriano's contract

The Cubs ate a lot of Carlos Zambrano?s contract when he went to the Marlins just to be rid of him and they are willing to do the same thing with Alfonso Soriano, reports Jon Heyman: specifically, $26 million of the $36 million Soriano is owed over the next two seasons.

The catch: you gotta give the Cubs an actual prospect.

Which might be tempting for a lot of teams, depending on how good the prospect is. ?Soriano hit .262/.322/.499 with 32 home runs and 108 RBI in 151 games this past season for Chicago. And while he?s not likely to repeat those numbers again in 2013, some power and durability in left field or at DH for $5 million a year is quite a bargain these days.

New biomarker for bone marrow cancer: Discovery suggests new ways of treating multiple myeloma

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Singapore scientists have identified FAIM, a molecule that typically prevents cell death, as a potential biomarker to identify an incurable form of cancer in the bone marrow. Patients with this form of cancer usually do not get cured with current standard treatments such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation, with an average survival of only about four years. FAIM could thus be a therapeutic target in these patients, as drugs developed to target the molecule could destroy multiple myeloma cells and hence eradicate the cancer.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer of blood cells, which arises due to an uncontrollable accumulation of antibody-producing plasma cells in the bone marrow. In Singapore, about 80 new cases of multiple myeloma are diagnosed every year. Unfortunately, most people who develop multiple myeloma have no clearly identifiable risk factors for the disease but factors such as individuals older than 50 years of age, men and obesity, may predispose one to the cancer.

The scientists discovered that a protein called Fas apoptosis inhibitory molecule (FAIM) can affect the activation of Akt, an important enzyme required for cancer cell proliferation. By silencing the expression of FAIM, the team showed that the myeloma cells could be destroyed. It was also found that this protein was present at higher levels in the plasma cells of these patients as compared to normal individuals, and that higher levels of FAIM correlated to poorer survival outcomes of patients. This is an important breakthrough as it not only identifies FAIM as a useful biomarker of multiple myeloma patients, but also as a good target that drugs can be developed for, in order to get rid of the cancer cells.

This collaborative research was conducted by scientists at A*STAR's Bioprocessing Technology Institute (BTI) led by Prof Lam Kong-Peng, along with clinician-scientists at National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) and the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) at the National University of Singapore. The research findings were published in Leukemia on 5 December 2012.

Prof Lam said, "This study adds onto previous studies in the institute demonstrating the utility of FAIM not only in biotechnology but now potentially in the clinic. It is a prime example of how a better understanding of FAIM protein function enables us to first use it to increase yield in biologics manufacturing, and now as a potential prognostic biomarker in the clinic for a deadly human disease such as multiple myeloma. This is really a translation from bench-to-bioreactor and bench-to-bedside."

"Treatment failure due to drug resistance is an important reason why patients with multiple myeloma have a poor outcome. In this study, we identified FAIM as a new biomarker that is associated with poor outcome as well as an important mediator of growth signals in myeloma cells that could lead to drug resistance. The detection of this biomarker will allow us to identify these high risk patients and possibly develop treatments that target FAIM to improve their outcome. This study also underlines the potential for collaborative work between A*STAR research institutes (BTI), CSI Singapore and the National University Cancer Institute of Singapore (NCIS) to perform research that may have significant impact on patients," said Associate Professor Chng Wee Joo, who is Senior Consultant Haematologist at the Department of Haematology-Oncology, NCIS and Senior Principal Investigator at CSI.

Stores Generate Business and Excitement with Flash Sales - Fox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Still crossing names off your Christmas list? If you?re looking for a particular item, a flash sale could be your best bet to getting a deal on what you want. With only 13 shopping days until Christmas retailers are offering more flash sales than ever.

?It?s that feeling of saving money that every woman loves,? said Nikole Hudson from Amelia?s- a boutique at Briarcliff Village in Kansas City, Missouri.

She says customers are all about the bottom line nowadays.

?I definitely think the economy has changed the market, the customers definitely want a good sale I?m the same way I want to feel like I?m getting the most for my money as I possibly can,? she said.

To draw in customers ?Amelia?s like thousands of other stores across the country? is offering flash sales. A flash sale is a limited time deal on a particular item at a particular time. A flash sale can last minutes, hours or a couple days.

?Consumers love to get a deal the thrill of the hunt is part of what women love and that?s what spurs so much of our economy,? said Jeff Fromm with Barkley, a Kansas City, Missouri advertising agency. Fromm says with customers plugged in it?s easier and faster than ever for businesses to get their attention.

?You have an ever connected consumer ?in terms of their adoption of technology tools which enable retailers to connect with them and offer deals that only offer for a really short period of time,? Fromm told Fox 4.

But, not all businesses say flash sales are for them. Mary Carol Garrity owns Nell Hill at Briarcliff Village. She says not everyone wants to rush to get a deal.

?I think the customer is more savvy than they?ve ever been,? she said. ?I think we just need to make it worthwhile for them to get into the car to drive to here or Atchison.?

Garrity says quality, service and making it right is what keeps her clients coming back, ?I think some stores like the big box stores are geared toward that to sales, but we consider ourselves we?re a small business we?re a specialty store so we?re more geared to product,? she said.

Every dollar counts and this Christmas businesses nationally and locally are banking on yours.

Taking Your Online Business to the Next Level | Inspiredpen Web

Are you one of those companies with first mover advantage to the internet, but just haven?t been able to maintain success in the recent years? If your long-established business has never taken advantage of SEO services or the plethora of social media tools that exist now ? it?s unfortunate to say that more often than not, other competitors will be able to tarnish your awareness & position steadily, but strongly.

There are many aspects of internet marketing that a company can leverage. The fact that many first-mover business sites are fairly old, gives them a distinct edge over their competitors right from the get go. This is because the age of your domain name plays a part in determining your website?s credibility. The next aspect of making sure that your company has a higher level of visibility on the net is to not just focus on years of strong brand reputation that you?ve created, but instead focus on product or service related keywords to optimize your website for. Needless to say, with billion searches made every month , not everyone is searching for your brand name.

Another crucial aspect of internet marketing is social media. Many businesses are now creating communities online which allow viral marketing to take place on its own. Of course there can be negative side effects of this as well; however that is where your own business principles and ethics come into play. If there is nothing detrimental that the company does, social media marketing can be a relatively cheap and effective method to increase your company exposure on the web.

Team creates versatile 3d nanostructures using DNA 'bricks'

Friday, November 30, 2012

Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have created more than 100 three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures using DNA building blocks that function like Lego? bricks ? a major advance from the two-dimensional (2D) structures the same team built a few months ago.

In effect, the advance means researchers just went from being able to build a flat wall of Legos?, to building a house. The new method, featured as a cover research article in the 30 November issue of Science, is the next step toward using DNA nanotechnologies for more sophisticated applications than ever possible before, such as "smart" medical devices that target drugs selectively to disease sites, programmable imaging probes, templates for precisely arranging inorganic materials in the manufacturing of next generation computer circuits, and more.

The nanofabrication technique, called "DNA-brick self-assembly," uses short, synthetic strands of DNA that work like interlocking Lego? bricks. It capitalizes on the ability to program DNA to form into predesigned shapes thanks to the underlying "recipe" of DNA base pairs: A (adenosine) only binds to T (thymine) and C (cytosine) only binds to G (guanine).

Earlier this year, the Wyss team reported in Nature how they could create a collection of 2D shapes by stacking one DNA brick (42 bases in length) upon another (http://wyss.harvard.edu/viewpressrelease/84/wyss-institute-develops-new-nanodevice-manufacturing-strategy-using-selfassembling-dna-building-blocks-).

But there's a "twist" in the new method required to build in 3D.

The trick is to start with an even smaller DNA brick (32 bases in length), which changes the orientation of every matched-up pair of bricks to a 90 degree angle?giving every two Legos? a 3D shape. In this way, the team can use these bricks to build "out" in addition to "up," and eventually form 3D structures, such as a 25-nanometer solid cube containing hundreds of bricks. The cube becomes a "master" DNA "molecular canvas"; in this case, the canvas was comprised of 1000 so-called "voxels," which correspond to eight base-pairs and measure about 2.5 nanometers in size ? meaning this is architecture at its tiniest.

The master canvas is where the modularity comes in: by simply selecting subsets of specific DNA bricks from the large cubic structure, the team built 102 3D structures with sophisticated surface features, as well as intricate interior cavities and tunnels.

"This is a simple, versatile and robust method," says Peng Yin, Ph.D., Wyss core faculty member and senior author on the study.

Another method used to build 3D structures, called DNA origami, is tougher to use to build complex shapes, Yin said, because it relies on a long "scaffold" strand of DNA that folds to interact with hundreds of shorter "staple" strands ? and each new shape requires a new scaffold routing strategy and hence new staples. In contrast, the DNA brick method does not use any scaffold strand and therefore has a modular architecture; each brick can be added or removed independently.

"We are moving at lightning speed in our ability to devise ever more powerful ways to use biocompatible DNA molecules as structural building blocks for nanotechnology, which could have great value for medicine as well as non-medical applications," says Wyss Institute Founding Director Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D.

Shoppers' habits not changed by garment plant fire

NEW YORK (AP) ? Before purchasing a shirt, shoppers will run their hands over the fabric, look at the price tag and wonder how it will hold up in the washing machine. Some might even ask if it makes them look fat.

The one detail, however, that is rarely considered: What are the conditions like for the workers making the shirt?

A horrific fire that raced through a Bangladesh garment factory Saturday, killing 112 people, has put the spotlight ? at least temporarily ? back on those workers and their sometimes treacherous work environment.

The factory, owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., made clothing for several retailers around the globe including Wal-Mart, Sears and The Walt Disney Co. All three companies have distanced themselves from responsibility for the incident, saying they didn't know that their subcontractors were using the factory.

Holiday shoppers have also maintained their distance from the tragedy.

"Truthfully, I hadn't even thought about it," said Megan Miller of Philadelphia as she walked out of the Disney Store in Times Square. "I had Christmas on my mind and getting my kids something from New York."

Shoppers from Cincinnati to Paris to Singapore all said the same thing: They were aware of the fatal factory fire, but they weren't thinking about it while browsing stores in the days since. Brand name, fit and ? above all ? prices were on their minds.

"Either our pockets get lighter or we have to live with more blood on our hands," said Amy Hong, a college student who was at a store in Singapore. "I try not to think about it."

Experts who survey shoppers say the out of sight, out of mind attitude is nothing new.

"When you talk to them about their biggest concerns, where something is made, or the abuses in some country, almost never show up," said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, which interviews 10,000 to 15,000 consumers a week, mostly on behalf of retailers. "The numbers are so small, I quit asking the question."

Convenience is much more important to shoppers.

Take Tammy Johnson who was at a Walmart in Bloomington, Minn. this week. She lives nearby and appreciates that the store has a large grocery section in addition to clothing and other goods.

"It's easier and it's cheaper," she said of her decision to shop there. "I hate that, but it is true."

Even those who want to make socially responsible purchases a priority have little information available to work with.

There's no widespread system in place to say where all the materials in a shirt come from let alone whether it was made in a sweatshop or not.

A label saying "Made in USA of imported fabrics" doesn't provide as much information to shoppers as they might think. Maybe tailors assembled it under good working conditions, but what about the people who wove the fabrics? Another label saying that a shirt is made from 100 percent organic cotton fails to say anything about the conditions of the factory in which it was made.

"What do they know at the point of sale about where it comes from, other than the tag?" said Paco Underhill, founder of Envirosell, which studies consumer behavior. "Our hearts are generally are in the right places. It's the question of making sure we have the knowledge and pocketbook to follow."

And it's not just clothing. It is hard to tell where televisions or laptop components are made.

Companies selling products say they even struggle to tell. Work is often given to subcontractors who themselves use subcontractors. While many major companies stipulate ethics and standards that their subcontractors must follow, policing them is a costly, time-consuming process that sounds easier than it is.

In the case of the Bangladesh factory, Wal-Mart said it had received a safety audit showing the factory was "high-risk" and had decided months before the blaze to stop doing business with Tazreen. But it said a supplier had continued to use Tazreen without authorization.

In recent years, consumers have become much more aware about the food they eat, and where it comes from.

Supermarkets are full of eggs laid by free-range chickens, organically-grown apples and beef from grass-fed, hormone-free cows. Some upscale restaurants now name the farm that provided them with pork chops. And customers pay a premium for these foods.

The difference: They perceive a direct benefit, since the food is going into their bodies.

Ethical choices when buying clothing ? or the latest version of Apple's iPhone ? are much more blurred.

Jean MacLeod, who was shopping at a Walmart on the south side of Indianapolis, is willing to pay more for goods if they are made in an ethically responsible manner and does it all the time when she buys food.

Walmart wants the best prices for its customers, she said, but the company also has power as a buyer to make sure factories have decent working conditions.

"They should be able to say, 'Look it, we don't want to buy from you unless you do things a little more our way,'" MacLeod said. "If they don't want to buy from them, then that means that factory will go out of business."

Arguments have been made that producing items with cheap labor isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Factories in the Third World can provide jobs with wages well above a region's average. They can help lift families out of severe poverty. The catch is that there are fewer safeguards to protect workers from being exploited from unscrupulous employers.

At the Bangladesh factory, locked exits prevented many workers from escaping after fire broke out.

It draws eerie parallels to New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911, where 146 people died within 18 minutes of a fire starting in a factory with locked exits.

That fire was the catalyst for widespread changes in labor laws in U.S. But in the 100 years since, the desire for cheap clothing hasn't abated and costly labor has just shifted to factories overseas.

"To put it maybe too frankly, profit and efficiency and competition always trump safety and health," said James A. Gross, a labor relations professor at Cornell University.

Not every company sees things that way.

Los Angeles-based American Apparel promotes itself as a line of "sweatshop free" clothing. Its founder and CEO, Dov Charney, said that companies can control working conditions ? they just need to bring production closer to home. American Apparel knits, dyes, cuts and sews all of its products in-house.

"When the company knows the face of its worker, that's important," Charney said. "You can control working conditions and quality."

Yes, American Apparel spends more on labor, but it isn't as much as you would expect. Charney estimates that an imported T-shirt selling for $6 at Walmart would cost about $6.30 if produced domestically thanks to the company's massive scale.

"The consumer can care. They can buy from companies that are committed to fair trade and try to seek out those companies," he said.

Take Nike.

In the mid-1990s, the sneaker giant came under pressure to change its ways after numerous reports of child labor, low wages and poor working conditions. Eventually wages climbed, minimum age requirements were put in place and Nike increased monitoring at its factories.

But such change only comes after persistent public pressure.

"Clothes makers will always do what they want, but the buyer should educate himself," said Paris shopper Pierre Lefebvre.

Not all buyers have that luxury. Family budgets are tight.

"Especially with this economy, we like our money to go as far as it can," said Lesley Schuldt, who left a Cincinnati Macy's this week with five shopping bags worth of jewelry, cookware and gifts. "I have no idea where half the stuff I bought was made, but I imagine it was not in the U.S."

Mercury's Water Ice Bodes Well for Alien Life Search

The discovery of huge amounts of water ice and possible organic compounds on the heat-blasted planet Mercury suggests that the raw materials necessary for life as we know it may be common throughout the solar system, researchers say.

Mercury likely harbors between 100 billion and 1 trillion metric tons of water ice in permanently shadowed areas near its poles, scientists analyzing data from NASA's Messenger spacecraft announced Thursday (Nov. 29).

Life on sun-scorched Mercury remains an extreme longshot, the researchers stressed, but the new results should still put a spring in the step of astrobiologists around the world.

"The more we examine the solar system, the more we realize it's a soggy place," Jim Green, the director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, said during a press conference today.

"And that's really quite exciting, because that means the amount of water that we have here on Earth ? that was not only inherent when it was originally formed but probably brought here ? that water and other volatiles were brought to many other places in the solar system," Green added. "So it really bodes well for us to continue on the exploration, following the water and its signs throughout the solar system." [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]

    Organics, too?

The observations by Messenger, which has been orbiting Mercury since March 2011, provide compelling evidence that reflective patches first spotted near the planet's poles by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico two decades ago are indeed water ice, researchers said.

In the coldest parts of Mercury ? permanently shadowed regions where temperatures drop to perhaps minus 370 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 223 degress Celsius) ? this ice can lie bare and exposed. But Messenger's data also show that much more frozen water is found in slightly warmer areas, buried beneath a strange dark material that acts as an insulator.

This dark stuff is likely a mixture of complex organic compounds, the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it, researchers said during Thursday's news conference.

"This organic material may be the same type of organic material that ultimately gave rise to life on Earth," said Messenger participating scientist David Paige of UCLA.

Helping scientists read the book of life

Mercury probably acquired much of its water and organic material the same way Earth did, researchers said ? via comet impacts and asteroid strikes. Ice and organics are common on the frigid bodies in the solar system's outer reaches.

"There's a lot of water out there, as there is a lot of water around other stars, but at substantial distance," said Messenger principal investigator Sean Solomon, of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

With its ultra-thin atmosphere and proximity to the sun, Mercury is probably not a good bet to host life as we know it. But finding ice and organics there should still inform the hunt for organisms beyond Earth and aid scientists' quest to learn more about how life took root on our planet.

"The history of life begins with the delivery to some home object of water and of the building blocks, the organic building blocks, that must undergo some kind of chemistry, which we still don't understand on our own planet," Solomon said.

"And so Mercury is becoming an object of astrobiological interest, where it wasn't much of one before," Solomon added. "That's not say to say that we expect to find any lifeforms ? I don't think anybody on this table does ? but in terms of the book of life, there are some early chapters, and Mercury may indeed inform us about what's in those chapters."

I???m hoping to reduce this trend and help you make your December just as healthy as every other month by sharing a number of dynamic exercises over the coming weeks. I hope you can include these dynamic training principles into your fitness plan.

Remember that variety is one thing that our bodies respond well to when it comes to training stimulus. If we get in too much of a routine, our fitness results gradually diminish and will eventually plateau. This is always a great time to shake it up a bit, and these dynamic training techniques are the answer.

Dynamic exercises utilize multiple body segments and muscle groups in an active manner that provides a number of different challenges, such as strength and balance, or flexibility and core strength, etc.

Often there can also be a cardiovascular component as well, resulting in an elevated heart rate and breathing frequency.

All of these benefits should add up to enhanced fitness, improved general health, elevated metabolism and increased fat loss. Although the dynamic overload aspect of these exercises is important, optimal body position, core stability and movement quality must prevail.

If you???ve had any serious spinal or joint conditions, or recent surgeries, it is important to get clearance from the experts in advance. As always, consult your doctor before beginning or modifying your training plan, and be sure to perform a progressive warm-up before exercising.

    Dynamic warm-up: Leg swings

I really like exercises that require the body to adapt and perform on a variety of levels at the same time.

Dynamic leg swings are just such an exercise, requiring balance, co-ordination, flexibility and core stabilization all at the same time, while elevating the heart rate and lubricating the joints.

Start by standing tall on both feet, and begin to swing your right leg like a pendulum, from front to back while balancing on your left foot. Keep your core engaged to maintain a neutral spine as you increase the power and velocity of the leg swing (imagine kicking a soccer ball over and over).

Begin to swing your arms opposite your legs, and focus on the core connection between your upper and lower extremities.

As you increase the force and range of motion of the arm and leg movements, you can begin to rise up onto your left forefoot as your right leg swings in front, dropping onto your heel as the leg swings back.

Always maintain neutral spinal and pelvic alignment. Perform two to three sets of 25 swings on each leg, striving for balanced power and stability on each side of the body.

    Dynamic conditioning: Twisting jump lunges

As a more advanced dynamic exercise, twisting jump lunges with a medicine ball incorporate many of the body???s muscles and require core stability, balance and overall athleticism. Start by holding a four- to six- pound medicine ball in both hands, directly in front of your body. Step forward with your right leg into a lunge position, keeping equal weight on both feet, with 90-degree angles at both knees and strong gluteal engagement. Turn from the rib cage, rotating your arms and the medicine ball over your front leg. Pause in this position, being sure to engage your core and stabilize your spine.

In a single, integrated, explosive movement, switch legs as you swing the medicine ball across to the left side, pausing in a balanced and aligned position. Repeat for a total of 20 repetitions, and perform two to three sets.

Dynamic core and flexibility: Pike inchworm

I like quadruped and sprawl position activities due to the core stability requirements to create the sling support against gravity.

Start in a full pushup position, with your arms fully extended supporting your upper body weight.

Maintaining core stability and good spinal alignment, slowly inch your feet forward toward your hands as you keep your legs long. The closer your feet get, and the higher your hips rise, the more you should feel your hamstrings and calves stretch.

When you???ve gone as far as possible, begin to slowly walk your hands forward until you reach the starting position. Repeat this sequence multiple times, using core control to keep your pelvis square and level throughout the movement.

Each time you reach the final pike position, try to push a bit higher with the hips to improve your range of motion. Perform a total of 10 to 15 repetitions through this sequence.

Prognostic impact of apoptosis marker Fas (CD95) and its ligand (FasL) on bladder cancer in Egypt: study of the effect of schistosomiasis

Objective: The Fas?Fas ligand (FasL) system has been recognized as a major pathway for the induction of apoptosis in cells and tissues.?Fas-mediated apoptosis is deeply involved in cancer cell death brought about by the immune system. This study was performed to determine?the Fas and FasL expression in human bladder cancer and the impact of schistosomiasis infection.

Material and methods: Of the 75 patients, 25 with chronic bilharzial cystitis and 50 with bladder cancer were included in this study. Ten?control patients were included in the study, following their consent. Fas and FasL expressions in bladder tissue were determined by indirect?immunohistochemistry using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method.

Results: The association of bilharziasis with malignancy raised the incidence of Fas positive immunoreactivity to 100%. The number of?malignant cases positive for Fas decreased with progress of tumour grade and stage. All control cases were negative for FasL expression.
The percentage of positive FasL malignant cases increased with increasing tumour grade or stage.

Conclusion: Malignant bladder lesions express high levels of Fas and decreased expression of Fas is associated with disease progression.?Urinary bladder carcinoma acquires the functional FasL during tumour progression that may induce apoptosis of anti tumour T lymphocytes.?Fas and FasL are recommended to be considered important tumour markers to define aggressive bladder cancer and may be?included in defining the surveillance protocol for superficial bladder cancer.

Safer spinach? Scientist's technique dramatically reduces E. coli numbers

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? University of Illinois scientists have found a way to boost current industry capabilities when it comes to reducing the number of E. coli 0157:H7 cells that may live undetected on spinach leaves.

?By combining continuous ultrasound treatment with chlorine washing, we can reduce the total number of foodborne pathogenic bacteria by over 99.99 percent,? said Hao Feng, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.

According to Feng, the USDA is looking for proposed technologies that can achieve a 4 to 6 log reduction in pathogen cells (a 6 log reduction would achieve a million-fold reduction in pathogenic bacteria). The food processing industry can now achieve a 1 log or tenfold reduction. In comparison, the U of I technique yields a 4 log reduction.

?Combining technologies is the key to bridging the gap between our current capacity and what USDA would like to see. The use of ultrasound exposure during chlorine washing gives the industry a way to significantly enhance microbial safety,? he said.

Feng?s pilot-scale system uses three pairs of large-area ultrasonic transducer boxes to form a channel through which ultrasound is provided to spinach leaves that are undergoing a continuous-flow chlorine wash. Spatial uniformity of ultrasound distribution was confirmed by tests using metallic foil.

The scientist said that continuous flow and uniformity of the field are key elements in the success of the process.

?Previous work with ultrasound used a tank or a medical-style probe, which doesn?t provide consistent and even distribution,? he noted.

System design is important for another reason, he said. ?Placement of the produce as it makes its way through the channel turns out to be very important. We had to find ways to make sure that leaves received similar exposure to ultrasound, taking care to minimize the chance that one leaf would block a nearby leaf?s exposure to the sound waves.?

If even part of a leaf escaped the full ultrasonic treatment, it could contaminate the rest of the produce, he said.

Feng and his team have used the technique on iceberg and romaine lettuce as well as spinach with similar results.

Co-authors of the paper, published in Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, are the U of I?s Bin Zhou and Arne J. Pearlstein. Funding was provided by Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland, with additional support from the USDA.

(AP) ? No. 1 Indiana had something to prove Tuesday night ? that it could play defense.

Just two days after the Hoosiers put together their best game this season, they delivered an even more impressive performance, getting 20 points from Cody Zeller and 19 each from Will Sheehey and Victor Oladipo, running away from No. 14 North Carolina 83-59 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"Our guys played great basketball tonight," coach Tom Crean said. "We played against an incredible opponent, everybody understands how great North Carolina is. Our guys had an edge to them tonight, and it was on the defensive end as much as anything else."

The conventional wisdom is that the Hoosiers (7-0) are one of the nation's top scoring teams.

But the detractors have questioned Indiana's willingness to defend and some have even suggested that weakness has allowed No. 2 Duke to close the gap on the nation's top-ranked team.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams disagrees.

"I think they are," he said when asked whether Indiana deserved to be No. 1. "The thing I like about them is they really are a team. They don't have one guy that beats you up, they beat you so many different ways."

Williams and the Tar Heels (5-2) learned that lesson the hard way in Bloomington.

In the second half, the Tar Heels shot just 27.8 percent from the field and went 0 for 5 from 3-point range. They were outscored 12-8 on the fast break, an area that had caused so much concern for Crean that he lost sleep leading up to the game.

"I know people criticize us for our defense, and they say 'If they can't play defense, how good can they really be?'" Oladipo said.

Offensively, the Hoosiers were their usual balanced selves.

Zeller was 8 of 13 from the field with four blocks, one steal and an assist. Oladipo and Sheehey were both 8 of 12 from the field. Senior guard Jordan Hulls was 5 of 8, including three 3-pointers, and finished with 13 points, eight assists and two steals.

"It's cool," Oladipo said when asked about beating a program like North Carolina this handily. "I mean, we've been working really hard and you guys know as well as I know that this program, well not last year, but over the last couple of years was really struggling and we wanted to get it back to where it belongs, which is on top. So to get a win like that, it's a humbling experience."

The best thing about this game for North Carolina may be the end of its run against teams from the Hoosier State.

A week ago, North Carolina trailed by 29 points in the second half before falling 82-71 to two-time national runner-up Butler.

On Tuesday, it was almost an instant replay.

Indiana closed the first half fast, started the second half fast and spent the rest of the game pulling away. The Hoosiers' biggest lead, 83-51, came with 4:22 left in the game.

Dexter Strickland led the Tar Heels with 14 points, Marcus Paige had 11 and James Michael McAdoo had 10 points and nine rebounds for North Carolina, which was missing sophomore guard P.J. Hairston, who stayed home with a sprained left knee.

There was a bigger problem, though. North Carolina couldn't figure out how to contain Zeller, one of this season's favorites to be the national player of the year.

"Boy, I would love to watch them play if it wasn't against my team," Williams said. "You look down the lineup and Cody Zeller, he's family to begin with, he's really a load to handle, and two other guys that I didn't even hear of when they were in high school, they just kicked our rear ends."

The game pitting two of the country's most storied programs ? which have combined for 10 national titles and 3,767 wins ? had been billed as one of this season's showcase events. For 16 minutes, it lived up to the hype.

Zeller changed everything with two flurries.

By setting high picks and drawing post players outside, it opened up the lanes for his cutting and slashing teammates who wasted no time exploiting the holes in the Carolina defense, using a 15-6 run at the end of the first half to take a 46-37 halftime lead.

The Hoosiers were only getting started.

"If you let them dictate and control the pace of the game, they're going to win," Crean said. "So we had to control and dictate the pace of the game, and to do that, we had to run."

But in the second half, the Hoosiers were out to prove something else ? that they could defend.

Over the first 8? minutes, North Carolina managed only three points, the tip-in and a free throw.

Zeller and Oladipo, meanwhile, combined for seven points in the opening 13-0 blitz that put Indiana ahead 59-37, and North Carolina never challenged again as the Hoosiers won their 34th consecutive home game in November against a team that was supposed to cause havoc.

"It's a huge statement," Sheehey said. "We prepared for this game for a couple of weeks now and that's about it. You saw the score. We played hard, we played well, we played together and when we do that, stuff is going to happen."

Economist's View: Fed Watch: Meanwhile, in Japan...

    Tim Duy:

Meanwhile, in Japan..., by Tim Duy: Back in September, I wrote:

What I expect to happen is this: The Bank of Japan will be forced into outright monetization at some point; a soft default in the form of higher inflation will occur. And dramatically higher inflation, I fear. Japan has not had inflation for two decades. I suspect they will experience all that pent-up inflation in the scope of a couple of years.

Sure enough, the battle begins. Almost lost in the holiday weekend, from Reuters last week:

Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said on Wednesday that on its return to power it would set a 2 percent inflation target with an eye to revising the law governing the Bank of Japan so as to boost cooperation between the government and the central bank...

...In its campaign platform unveiled on Wednesday, the LDP called for bold monetary easing through cooperation between the government and the central bank on debt management, but it made no mention of Abe's calls for the BOJ to buy debt to finance infrastructure projects.

The response from the Bank of Japan was swift:

But BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa dismissed many of Abe's proposals, including the possible revision of the Bank of Japan law, a step critics say is aimed at clipping the central bank's independence and forcing it to print money to finance public debt that is already double the size of Japan's economy.

"Central bank independence is a system created upon bitter lessons learned from the long economic and financial history in Japan and overseas countries," Shirakawa told a news conference....

...Shirakawa was adamant the central bank would not directly underwrite government debt because bond yields would spike and hurt the economy.

"No advanced country has adopted such a policy," he said.

Shirakawa is correct. Modern central banks may have lost some control over inflation at times, but I don't think any has engaged in outright monetization of government debt. Yet despite Shirakawa's insistence to the contrary, I still think that is exactly where Japan is headed. More central bank history in the making.

Arduino Blog ? Blog Archive ? Kickstarter, Trademarks and Lies

Kickstarter has undoubtedly changed the world by helping makers turn into an? industry to be reckoned with.
As with every brilliant invention the first prototypes always have a few issues that get fixed over time by trial and error. Figuring out a way to respond to issues and criticism quickly and effectively is the essence of growth and Kickstarter definitiely had done a lot but there is still a number of issues that are hard to deal with.

I want to show you an example of something that is happening to us right now.

A few weeks ago somebody launched a kickstarter for a project called smARtDUINO (notice the choice of lowercase/uppercase letters) that is supposed to be a better Arduino and all the rest. There is one of them every week so nothing new there.

The first issue that struck me was that right in the project title they claim to be the ?former ARDUINO?s manufacturer?

Since I?ve never heard of this person I?ve emailed immediately the factory asking if they knew him.
Nobody had ever heard of him, then a long search started that ended with the realisation that he hired two factory workers who used to work for one of the many suppliers that our manufacturing partner uses.

So according to them, if I hire two factory workers from Ford I can claim I used to manufacture Ford cars?

When we got an email from an important worldwide reseller asking us if our manufacturing partner was behind this kickstarter, we really got worried that the confusion was going to create serious damages to us and decided to act.

We asked our lawyer in Italy to get in touch with this person to have some statements rectified while I got in touch with Kickstarter to see if they could act as a mediator in the dispute.

Based on the current available information, it seems that the company that owns the domain (Aldi Technology) doesn?t exist and the person who launched the kickstarter, who claims to be living in Italy (Mr. Dimitri Albino), actually moved to china years ago.

Italian speakers will find some old forum messages linking this person to some dubious activity.

Every week there is a kicstarter where, in a a way or another, somebody claims to be us? Either they call their project ?Arduino? straight away or they ride the Arduino name in more clever ways. We usually email them but not all respond etc etc.

I wrote to kickstarter throught their public feedback form and emailed directly to somebody in marketing I had contact with in the past.

My point was that Kickstarter have to provide some kind of assistance when there are trademark violations or when somebody makes false statements.
Like many important websites have a clear and direct way to raise issues of trademark violations, Kickstarter should also make it easy to raise issues with them.

I got no reply from the marketing person and the next day I get this :
    ?Hi Massimo,

Thanks for writing in and bringing this to our attention. This is a matter that must be taken up directly with the project creator. You can contact them by clicking ?Contact me? on the project page.

    Best,
    Kickstarter?

Well I don?t think Kickstarter can remove themselves from the picture, they are not a charity, they make money out of what they do. They should protect their users by better vetting who wants to be funded and by making it easier to raise issues about individual kicstarters.

    What does the community think?

6 Christmas Gifts for Baby Boomer Men & Women | Boomerinas.com

    By Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)

If you are a Boomer or you are the child of a Boomer, here are some ideas for birthday or holiday presents for people over over 50 or 60.? Check out Baby Boomer Christmas cartoons, nostalgia gifts, Rick Steves books, stuff made in America, and more.

As a Boomer chick who?s right?in the middle of the Baby Boomer cohort, I?ll do my best to give you a list of Christmas presents that your favorite Boomer?will love... whether or not he or she will admit it.

    1. The Original Christmas Classics DVD

Once upon a time, there were only three television channels, plus PBS. Well, I haven?t seen all of the cartoons and stop-animation goodies on this DVD, but most Boomers will remember these shows. So, get ready to watch your favorite Boomer?s eyes glaze over with nostalgia, and get yourself some earplugs so you can make it through another round of stories about the good old days. The real gift will be when you visit your dad or mom and show him/her how to change the channel from Netflix Instant to DVD input. What a gift.

    • Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer
    • Santa Claus is Comin? to Town
    • Frosty the Snowman
    • Mr. Magoo?s Christmas Carol (I actually liked most Mr. Magoo cartoons. This is the best show on the DVD.)

    2. Baby Boomer Nostalgia

Nostalgia and trivia books for Baby Boomers are always fun. Heck? just getting an actual hard-copy book is nostalgic. Here are some ideas:

    • The Oldies Music Aptitude Test: Trivia Fun for Armchair Deejays, by Barbara Jastrab.
    • Rock Lyrics: 50'S, 60'S, 70's Trivia Quiz Book, by Presley Love
    • Green Stamps to Hot Pants: Growing Up in the '50s and '60s, by Genny Zak Kieley
    • Timeline of America: Sound Bytes from the Consumer Culture, by Floyd M. Orr
    • Mick Jagger, by Philip Norman

    3. Retro Baby Boomer Candy

There are several websites that specialize in candy from the 50?s, 60?s, and 70?s.? If your Boomer with a sweet tooth isn?t borderline diabetic, here are some of the weird goodies I remember from my childhood.

    • Candy Cigarettes
    • Bit O Honey
    • Turkish Taffy (great for fillings)
    • Wax Lips (strange and tasteless, but will bring a smile)
    • Chiclets
    • Nik L Nip Wax Bottles
    • Candy Necklaces (taken away from every schoolgirl)
    • Zero Bars
    • Boston Baked Beans (the dentist will love you)
    • Fruit Stripe Gum

Oh my Gawd, these are just a few of the candies that I see and all of them crack me up.? You do know?that most of these sugary treats?cost a penny or a nickel back in the day.? Then inflation hit and some of them?rose to?(gasp) a dime.

    4. Mediterranean Cruise Ports by Rick Steves

I love all of the Rick Steves guidebooks. His books are based on getting to know the locals and getting the biggest bang for your buck. I do find it a bit weird for Rick Steves to be talking about one-day excursions, but I trust everything he says, and I never go to Europe without buying?the appropriate book?beforehand.? (Well, I did go once without doing my Rick-Steves homework? and I?ll never do that again.)? The Mediterranean Cruise Ports book?will show?you how to make the most of?a few hours in?the main?Mediterranean?ports and how to get to several cool places nearby.

Even if mom isn?t booked on a Mediterranean cruise, it?s fun to browse travel books. Daydreaming is fun. And, who knows, mumsy might decide to take you along someday.

    5. Gifts Made in America

Most Boomers actually remember a time when the United States still had a deep manufacturing base. Shoes were made in America. Clothes were made in America. Heck, even toys were manufactured here.

If you want to keep the United States in business, do your part to bring back America?s manufacturing base. I don?t think that having an ?information based? economy is sustainable in the long run. And, manufacturers in the US are almost always more environmentally aware (or coerced) than manufacturers in less regulated parts of the world. And, I?m no hillbilly country-western type of Boomer; I?m an ex-hippie.

Be sure to let mom or dad know that you chose the product because it was made in the USA, and buying American-made products is the best way to fight corporate greed.

Stop calling us ?seniors.? Many Boomers are still in their 50s. Even though that sounds old to you juniors, it?s not quite Seniorsville, which traditionally starts at age 65. ?And, stop talking about golden years, unless you?re referencing the David Bowie song. As for Silver Surfer, I?ve never been able to stand on a surfboard and?my natural?hair is?neither silver nor gray. If you want to call me a grade-A platinum b**ch, that might be acceptable.

If you can?t manage to stop calling us "seniors," consider getting your favorite Boomer mom or dad?the South Park Episode of Grey Dawn.? Or, give your mom a promise that you'll call her once a week. Then, follow through.? Well, be careful about following through? you might give your mom a heart attack.
